Joanna Rose
1. What inspired you to become a CrossFit coach?
My personal love for functional fitness and its long-term health benefits, wanting to truly understand the mechanics of good form and be able to pass this on to others in a practical & meaningful way.
2. How long have you been involved in CrossFit, both as a participant and as a coach?
As a participant - 12 years
As a coach - 6.5 years
3. What certifications and qualifications do you hold related to CrossFit and fitness training?
My CrossFit Level 1, and 5-year refresher/recertification in 2023.
4. Can you describe your coaching philosophy and approach to training athletes?
Surprise people by showing them how absolutely everything we do is infinitely scalable to their level, yet still works the same muscle groups and allows for progression & improvement. An all-inclusive community!
5. What do you believe are the most important qualities of a successful CrossFit coach?
Listening to understand individual members, giving reasons for why we do things a certain way as opposed to just instructing, and building relationships with clients, as well as a positive group dynamic. Also showing our vulnerabilities as coaches, because we all have weaknesses but we work on them!
6. How do you customise workouts to accommodate different skill levels and abilities within a class?
By preparing in advance as much as possible, knowing the workout and options for scaling, as well as the needs of individuals (injuries, etc.). I also ensure there is interaction at the whiteboard before commencing the class, between athletes as well as athlete to coach.
7. What strategies do you use to keep your athletes motivated and engaged?
Humour, encouragement, knowledge, teachable cues, respect and adaptation.
8. Can you share a memorable success story of an athlete you have coached?
Seeing small details click and a movement quickly advance is satisfying. For example, I’ve had several athletes struggle with the kipping motion necessary for rig work, and explaining the shoulder activation necessary. Then watching them master it is like reliving my own experience (and feeling accomplished all over again!). They often end up being better than me at certain movements!
9. How do you stay updated with the latest CrossFit techniques, trends, and research?
Read the CF L1 update emails and journals, attempt to participate in courses as they arise (such as for judging) and retake the qualification at regular intervals, as necessary.
10. What advice would you give to someone who is new to CrossFit and considering joining your class?
It can feel overwhelming at first, but you will surprise yourself as you realise your own abilities and potential. It’s addictive watching the weightlifting numbers increase and being part of the community is so rewarding.
