1.What inspired you to become a CrossFit coach?

Having been part of the community since 2017, I loved the classes and the people that I really wanted to be part of the coaching team to give something back. Regardless of capability everyone pushes themselves and it’s so great to see them develop and I wanted to be part of our community’s journey.

2.How long have you been involved in CrossFit, both as a participant and as a coach?

I joined Ore in 2017 and became a coach in 2021. I moved to Telford in 2016 and was looking to find somewhere that resembled my old gym which had a “family feel” to it. Fast forward to present day and some of my closest friends are from the box.

3.What certifications and qualifications do you hold related to CrossFit and fitness training?

CrossFit level 1

4.Can you describe your coaching philosophy and approach to training athletes?

My approach to training athletes is regardless of what your goals and outcomes are everyone deserves your times. Understand that some may turn up just wanting to move whereas others want to push themselves and to give my support appropriately. I believe that everyone is capable of doing more than they think and in my role it’s imperative to build confidence and to watch them develop through their CrossFit journey.

5.What do you believe are the most important qualities of a successful CrossFit coach?

Supportive, positive, respectful, approachable and a clear communicator.

6.How do you customize workouts to accommodate different skill levels and abilities within a class?

CrossFit is the epitome of scaling for all, all workouts can be adjusted. Personally depending on reason for scaling it’ll be either changing, movement, weights or rep scheme. Majority of the time it’ll be movement however if I feel someone is cable of the doing the movement I’d then move to changing one of the other two elements.

7.What strategies do you use to keep your athletes motivated and engaged?

Supporting athletes through the last few rounds, or a bit of healthy competition. But also I’m a big believer that athletes don’t want to hear themselves breath so loud music personally I try to use as an engagement tool. (I may need to improve my music choices athletes may say )

8.Can you share a memorable success story of an athlete you have coached?

For me I don’t necessarily have one because I think all the success stories have such a positive impact on myself. Those that stand out are for those who struggle to link their gymnastics or really focus on their weightlifting technique. When you see it “click” it’s such a happy occasion and I always reinforce how amazing it is as an achievement in itself as it takes some long than others etc.

9.How do you stay updated with the latest CrossFit techniques, trends, and research?

CrossFit newsletter, word by mouth and CrossFit website.

10.What advice would you give to someone who is new to CrossFit and considering joining your class?

Everyone is so supportive regardless of level, in addition to a coach you have peers who are also there to help you with your journey! Come with an open mind and we will work together to achieve your goals regardless of what they are
