Charlie Gregory
1. What inspired you to become a CrossFit coach?
I saw how it was for everyone, inclusive. After what Crossfit had done for me, I had the natural need to give back to the community.
2. How long have you been involved in CrossFit, both as a participant and as a coach?
10 years. In June 2019, I trained to become a coach.
3. What certifications and qualifications do you hold related to CrossFit and fitness training?
British Weightlifting Level 1 and Level 2, British Weightlifting Technical Official, CrossFit Level 1, Safeguarding.
4. Can you describe your coaching philosophy and approach to training athletes?
I won’t lie, I’m quite blunt (for my sins), but I’m realistic. I’m not going to give you a rep on a back squat if it’s not at the correct depth, even though it just killed you, but I think from this it makes people strive for the best. I like to educate as we go along, so give you a cue, if it works explain why it worked.
5. What do you believe are the most important qualities of a successful CrossFit coach?
Knowledge, relatable, no ego.
6. How do you customise workouts to accommodate different skill levels and abilities within a class?
Knowing the individuals and watching week by week where we can push or pull back. Learning people's weaknesses and working on them receptively.
7. What strategies do you use to keep your athletes motivated and engaged?
Games, in particular, PE games for a warm-up. Honestly, adults love them! Giving burpees as penalties (I did say I was mean) and working with individuals and letting them know when it’s a great movement.
8. Can you share a memorable success story of an athlete you have coached?
I’ve had two this year and both made me cry...
One was a newer member who was back squatting for the first time, but seeing how much determination it took, the happiness it delivered to the individual and it making them believe in themselves, was brilliant! The other was a member becoming confident with the overhead squat movement. Seeing this member again not have the confidence for so long and adding simple little cues, we had at least 5x5 perfect sets!
9. How do you stay updated with the latest CrossFit techniques, trends, and research?
Social media, newsletters, volunteering at events to help out and running our competitions at ORE.
10. What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit and considering joining your class?
Just get stuck in, you definitely don’t have to be fit! This is your journey. Be open to it. Yes, it will hurt a little a few days after, but what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger!
