But first, this... have a watch
CrossFit is about 'general physical preparedness' - that is, we want to become a "jack of all trades", and be generally prepared for whatever endeavour life may throw at us.
"A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
In a practical situation, it becomes defeating to be strong at all costs - yes you can lift that human being but can you then carry them away from danger; yes you can run towards danger to rescue that human being, but can you lift and carry them to safety.
In a more daily concept, can you lift your shopping, children or self off the floor, but struggle to carry them or yourself to where you need to go.
"Being strong at all costs, having running ability at all costs, or being a specialist in anything at all costs, becomes limiting outside of that specialty."
We get generally physically prepared by using functional movements, that is moving our body in the way it was designed to be moved, in an infinite variety of combinations, and do those combinations at our own high level of intensity. Routine and repetition of combinations and length of workouts is our enemy, because your body becomes used to repetition, and once it is used to repetition it stops adapting, i.e. you stop getting 'fitter'.
"Routine is the enemy."
This makes CrossFit a hell of a lot of fun- the variety is what we love- short and long workouts and the wide variety of movements we use! But beyond fun, our workouts and our own personal routine of when and how often we workout needs to be effective. Fun takes you only so far, but if you aren't making the gainz, what is the point?!
So why are we refocussing?
CrossFit is a hell of a lot of fun. Always there is a skill to challenge you, whether you are learning it for the first time or perfecting it. Always there is a new workout to challenge you in a new way.
Don‘t worry, we aren’t materially changing anything…. more to come in the next post!
